The College Debt

A young man who had recently graduated from college was approached by an older gentleman he knew from the community.  Their conversation went something like this:

“Congratulations young man.  You’ve worked hard and now you have your degree.  You should be proud.”
“Thank you sir; it was difficult.”
“And I suppose that you have a substantial college debt.”
“That’s true for sure.”
“I would like to pay off your debt.”
“You would? WOW that would be fantastic!!!  But, you said you would like to.  Are there any conditions?  I’ll send you Christmas cards for the rest of my life.”
“Yes there is a condition.  If I pay off your debt, I will own you.”
“You will own me?” Says the startled young man.  “What does it mean, ‘you will own me’?”
“It means that I will have a claim to anything you earn, to any of your assets, and whenever you have a significant decision to make, you will consult me.”
“Whoa, that’s pretty heavy.  I need to think about this for a while.  Have you done this with others?”
“Yes, it is heavy and you should think very carefully about it because it’s a very important decision.  And yes, I have done this with many others. I encourage you to talk with them.”

It is generally believed that “Jesus died to pay the price for the penalty of our sins”.  The trouble is, the Bible doesn’t say that Jesus paid for anything.  It does say He bought us. He redeemed us.  He purchased us with His blood.  So, He owns us.

For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body. 1 Corinthians 6:20
