The first.\u00a0 A young man going off to college was given a credit card by his father who said, \u201cNow don\u2019t overdo it son\u201d.\u00a0 He replied \u201cSure pops\u201d.\u00a0 Never-the-less he ran up quite a bill and his dad paid it off at the end of every month.\u00a0 After a semester or so, one of his buddies said \u201cYour dad must really love you.\u00a0 You run up quite a bill and he pays off your debt.\u201d The young man replied, \u201cYeah, he\u2019s got lots of money.\u201d<\/p>\n
The second:\u00a0 During the second world war a young soldier de-serted along with a half a dozen others.\u00a0 He was captured with his comrades and was chosen by lot to be hanged as a warning to any others.\u00a0 Another soldier, not one of those who had deserted, said, \u2018Permit me to take his place.\u2019\u00a0 After a short discussion they granted his request and executed him in place of the one who deserted.\u00a0 Now the man whose life was spared lived the rest of his life in gratitude, and as a tribute to, the one who had sacrificed his life to deliver him from death.<\/p>\n
For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.<\/em> 1 Corinthians 6:20<\/p>\n \u201cAtonement\u201d is the Bible term for what Jesus did in dying on the cross to bring salvation to mankind.\u00a0 Today, many people liken the atonement to the situation of the first young man.\u00a0 That view is not Biblical.\u00a0 Jesus did not die to pay off our debt so we could blithely keep running up the debt.\u00a0 The Bible says that He bought us with His blood; He owns us.<\/p>\n
